I think a lot of effective ads/commercials that people look at and believe are the ads and commercials that portray to their children. Such as, ads for healthy foods like all the cerals that advertise they are filled with fiber and all the good vitamins. Or the toys that will help their children learn easier and faster like all the Leap Frog commercials that actually show kids reading and learning so parents think that the object will also help their child so they go out and buy this item. Or ads can go the other direction and turn you away from choosing an item such as fast food. All the commercials you see for fast food are just advertising what they have to eat that’s new, not that it’s completely unhealthy for you.
Ads such as this one show that the patient is blaming the fast food place or places that he has been eating has made him fat. Ads and commercials like this show the kids that it’s ok to eat anything you want and it’s not their fault if they become obese. McDonalds does have some fruit and salads on their menu and they do advertise that. They also have fruit and milk that the parent can get for their kids in the kids meal instead of French fries and at least they advertise that part.
These ads will definitely affect me and I’m more aware of the commercials now and I look more into what they are really trying to sell you instead of their “crap” that they think they can pull over people’s head to reel them into buying whatever the advertisement group is selling.

Can popular culture be hurtful or helpful in the classroom?
I do think that popular can be beneficial in the classroom because technology is going to continue to advance and our children need to know how to deal with it and handle it. I watched a YouTube clip to educate myself a little more about this and the lady in the clip gave a very good example when using popular culture in the classroom such as teaching music and relating it to where you are located. One teacher taught outside the city of Detroit who said she would teach more hip hop music and that style of music and the other teacher taught in a more rural area who would teach more country and being able to relate to her students that way. Using movie clips that can relate to your students depending on what you’re trying to get across whether it’s a movie to portray government or sociology or science can be very helpful. There are a lot of movies or even you tube clips that will help kids now days learn better and maybe a little eaiser for kids that are visual learners. It might be able to help kids think outside the box a little more. I’ve had about 3 or 4 teachers in the three years that I’ve been at Yavapai college show video’s and that has helped tremendously and with technology advancing so much now days I think that is how the students are going to be able to learn eaiser later on down the road.

Deceiving the Deceitful
So I use the Library database on the Yavapai College website because they have electronic newspapers and magazines and also numerous ways to find a specific topic or just something in general. They have subjects on Nursing and History and English and almost anything to with school or research. I think one of the easiest ways to determine its credibility is that it’s on the Yavapai College website under the web address ending in .edu. It gives times when the Prescott and Verde Valley libraries are open and also the phone numbers to both so you can call and get more information if needed. It also gives you the location of the libraries and both campuses. It gives you tutorials on how to use the online library resources as well as a guide to complete your research process. It also has US government documents for those who are interested in history or need it for a school project. There are also some things through the YC online library that you can only get if you are a student or are on one of the campuses and are using a temporary login name. It has a separate page for explaining the policies of the library and frequently asked questions from students and other users in case you have the same question. If your question isn’t there in the FAQ’s then it has a tab that you can click on that lets you ask the librarian a question. I don’t really know how long it takes for a response but it’s there for you if you need to use it.

Is advertisment an art form of persuading?
If you look at today’s society there are a lot of trends and fads due to advertisement and persuading. People today are easily persuaded to “go with the flow” pretty much because bigger is always better…right? I don’t really think so. Advertisement and persuasion go hand in hand because that is all advertisement is, persuasion. It’s telling you why you need the product not really how it will benefit you or why it’s good for you. As soon as people hear how great the product the feel as if they have to have it because it’s whatever everyone else has. If you have what other people then I think there is a sense of “hip-ness” maybe. You’re keeping up with the trend and keeping up with being hip and it could make people feel better about themselves because what you want is always better then what you already have. It’s like an upgraded truck or tv, the bigger the better other people think you are. Persuasion is somewhat an art because you are convincing other people, strangers, that what you’re selling is what they absolutely need and if the people on the receiving end of the persuasion buy what you’re selling then you have won and defeated the buyer.
